Question: What is EMDR?

Answer: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a type of psychotherapy that is used to treat trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other psychological conditions. It was developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s and is based on the idea that traumatic experiences can overwhelm the brain's natural ability to process information, leading to symptoms like intrusive thoughts, nightmares, and emotional distress.

During EMDR therapy, the therapist helps the client reprocess traumatic memories by using bilateral stimulation, which can include side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones. This bilateral stimulation is thought to help the brain process the traumatic memories in a more adaptive way, reducing the emotional charge associated with them.

EMDR therapy typically involves several phases, including history-taking, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, and body scan. The goal is to help the client process the traumatic memories, develop more adaptive coping mechanisms, and reduce symptoms related to trauma.
