How To Mark a Message as "Not spam" in Gmail

  • Open Gmail on your computer
  • Click More in the main menu on the left
  • Click Spam
  • Select the email you want to remove
  • Click Not spam at the top

Marking an email as "Not spam" teaches Gmail how to manage messages from that sender in the future. You can also prevent emails from being marked as spam by adding the sender's email address to your contacts list.

Gmail uses machine learning to recognize spam and understand your preferences. You can also provide Gmail with feedback about your email preferences by starring emails.

How To Add Email Addresses To Your Safe Senders List On Gmail

To make sure you always receive important emails in Gmail, add contacts to your safe senders list. This will ensure they don’t accidentally get dropped into the junk folder.

The anti-spam features in Gmail are a helpful way to de-clutter your inbox and avoid opening malware-ridden emails by accident. However, the junk folder is not perfectly designed, as Gmail usually judges what spam is based on the format of the email, its sender, attachments, and links included. Sometimes, legitimate emails fall into the ‘potential spam’ category when they are not, in fact, unwanted messages.

In these cases, important emails can fail to make it past Gmail’s spam filter. Instead of getting sent to your inbox, they get sent to your spam folder, where they can be easily lost. To avoid this, add trustworthy contacts and email addresses to your safe senders list. This tells Gmail to bypass its spam filtering process and, instead, make sure that every email from this sender goes straight to your inbox.

Here’s how to do it:

To add a trusted sender to your Gmail contacts list, you can:

  • Open an email from the sender you want to add
  • Hover over their name until a box appears with more details
  • Click the plus sign icon in the upper right corner of the box
  • Enter the sender's email address and any other relevant information
  • Save the information to your address book

You can also add a sender to your contacts by:

  • Selecting the Contacts icon in the upper right corner of Gmail
  • Selecting Create Contact
  • Entering the sender's email address and any other relevant information
  • Saving the information to your address book

Adding a sender to your contacts tells Gmail that you want to receive messages from them. This effectively whitelists the contact in Gmail.

You can also create a safe senders list in Gmail by:

  • Clicking the gear icon on the right
  • Selecting See all settings
  • Clicking Filters and blocked addresses
  • Selecting Create a new filter
  • Adding the email addresses or domains you want to pass as not spam
  • Clicking Create filter
  • Checking the Never send it to spam box
  • Clicking Create filter

Can You Add an Email Address to Your Safe Senders List on the Gmail App?

The Gmail app does not allow you to edit your spam features from your phone. However, you can whitelist email addresses by adding them to your Gmail contacts lists.

If you have no choice but to whitelist an email address from your phone, you can log into your Gmail account using the desktop version of Gmail on your phone’s browser. From here, you can follow the same steps as above.
